FIRST GENERATION

1. Seth Seely (A). Born 30 Dec 1737 at Stamford, Connecticut (Ref A). Married 21 Nov 1756 at Stamford to Sarah Scofield (Ref A). Seth died 6 May 1823 at Long Reach, Kings Co, NB (Ref A). Sarah was born 11 Nov 1737 at Stamford and died 2 Feb 1820 at Long Reach. Seth arrived at Saint John in the Spring Fleet with a wife, four children ten years of age or older, and three children under ten (Ref B). He travelled from New York to Saint John on the "Union" which loaded at Huntingdon Bay 11 - 16 Apr 1783 and arrived at Saint John on 10 May 1783 (Ref C). He initially was granted Lot 389 in Parrtown (Saint John) on 14 Aug 1874 (Ref E). This lot was sold to John Ward 24 Nov 1794 for nine Pounds. He was granted lot No. 15, 200 acres, at Long Reach, Kingston, Kings Co, on 14 Jul 1784 (Ref E). He submitted a Land Petition, dated 22 Aug 1812, which states that he was originally granted 200 acres, and that he and his son Linus were applying for 300 acres each in the parish of Norton, on the North side of the Kennebecasis River (Ref F). He received this grant, Lot No. 2, Reddin Brook, on 19 Oct 1816 (Ref E). Identified children:

2. Tamar Seely (AB). Born 19 Nov 1757 at Stamford, Connecticut (Ref A). Married ? to Abraham Carrington. Remarried about 1787 to John Britney, a Loyalist from Pennsylvania who had served in the Buck's County Volunteers and in the Queen's Rangers (Ref C). She died in 1855 at the home of her son, John (ABD), in Ontario (Ref A). John died 10 Nov 1846 at Greenwich, Kings Co, age 95 (21 Nov 1946 NBC). In a testimonial attached to her father's petition for compensation for losses he suffered in Connecticut because of his loyalty to the Crown, dated 27 Dec 1786, she signed as Tamar Carrington, wrongly transcribed as Harrington (Ref G). An Abraham Carrington and wife arrived on the "Union" and he died soon after, leaving Tamar a widow. She was granted Lot 413 in Parrtown on 14 Aug 1784 (Ref E). She and her brother, Seth, were both granted Lot 11, Saint John River, Wickham Parish, Queens Co (100 acres) on 6 Jul 1784 (Ref E). On 3 Sep 1784, she was granted Lot 6, Washedemoak Lake, Cambridge Parish, Queens Co (100 acres) (Ref E).

4. Annah Seely (AD). Born 3 Mar 1765 (Ref A). An Anne Seely married Alexander Fairchild at Saint John 24 Sep 1786 (Ref J). He was a carpenter from Connecticut who served in the Prince of Wales American Regiment, arriving at Saint John before 15 Jun 1783 (Ref C). He was dead before 25 Sep 1789 as Seth (A) bought 100 acres from his estate on that date from his executors, Anne Fairchild of Kingston and Thomas Crawford of Sussex, for 66 Pounds and 15 Shillings (Kings Co Wills, Book C No 1, Pages 118-119, No 301). Annah was married about 1792 to James Gaynor, a blockmaker. She died 28 Aug 1820, age 56 (30 Aug 1820 City Gazette). James came to Saint as a member of Refugee Company 11 aboard "Amity's Production" in the June Fleet which made a general landing on 5 Jul 1783 (Ref D). He was granted Lot 579 in Parrtown (Saint John) and became a Freeman of Saint John in 1784. In 1795 he was a member of the Loyal Artillery in Saint John. He died 10 Jan 1823 in Saint John, age 72 (23 Jan 1823 NBC). Identified children:

His wife was born 14 May 1773 (Ref A) and died 3 Jan 1857, age 83 years and nine months (10 Jan 1857 NBC). Seth arrived at Saint John on the "Union" with his father in May 1783 (Ref D). He and his widowed sister, Tamar, were granted Lot No. 11, St John River, Wickham Parish, Queens Co (100 acres) on 6 Jul 1784 (Ref E). He apparently stayed in Saint John and became a ship captain. In 1812, he was captain of the privateer "Nancy" and also commanded many other ships (Ref O). Identified children:

7. Jerome Seely (AG). Born 7 Jun 1772 (Ref A). Married about 1798 to Anna (Nancy) Moore (Ref A). She died 29 Mar 1825 (Ref A). He was remarried 31 Jul 1844 to Margaret Hunter (Ref K). He was 72 and she was 19. Jerome died at the home of his son Obadiah (AGI) in Ontario in 1861 (Ref A). The 1851 census of Norton Parish, Kings Co, lists Jerome as a farmer, age 79, with his wife, Margaret, age 26, and his three children by Margaret. Margaret was remarried 6 Aug 1860 to Jasper Roxborough (15 Aug 1860 HQ). Jasper, age 70, and Margaret, age 44, are listed in the 1871 Census of Lancaster Parish, Saint John Co. Her sons, Hubert (AGN) and William (AGN), are also listed in the household. Identified children:

Linus and his father, Seth, submitted a petition dated 22 Aug 1812 requesting grants of 300 acres each on the North side of the Kennebecasis River in Norton Parish (Ref F). The petition states that Linus had a wife and seven children at that time. He was granted the land, Lot No. 1, Reddin Brook, on 19 Oct 1816 (Ref E). He was not listed in the 1851 Census of Kings Co so he had presumably moved to Saint John by then. Unfortunately, the 1851 and 1861 Census records for Carleton (Saint John) cannot be located. Noah is listed in the 1851 Census of Hampton Parish, Kings Co, as a farmer, age 48, with wife, Jane, age 49. Identified children:

Charlotte was born in 1823 and died 21 Dec 1895 (27 Dec 1895 DT). The 1851 Census lists Walter as a farmer, age 45, in Sussex Parish, Kings Co, with his second wife, Charlotte, age 26, and three of their children.
