Thelma Mae Backus

Thelma Mae Backus, 69, of 104 Green Street Court died Friday at St. Joseph's Hospital.

A native of Heuvelton, Mrs. Backus lived in Syracuse since 1936. She retired several years ago from Nationwide Insurance Co. and previously was employed with W.T. Grant Co. and Remington Rand Corp.

Mrs. Backus was a member of Gethsemane United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women and NEHDA. She was a former president of the Jefferson School Mothers Club.

Surviving are her husband of 52 years, Edward J.; four sons, Leeland E. of Bernhards Bay, David J. of Pennellville, Donald L. of Kirkville and George E. of Bridgeport; a brother, John P. Seeley of Interlaken, Fla.; a sister, Leah E. Basio of Clay; 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Gethsemane United Methodist Church, the Rev. Dean Moyer officiating. Burial will be in White Chapel Memory Gardens, DeWitt.
