Louise Seeley Wilder Furman, 91, passed away peacefully with dignity in her home on Friday, April 9, 2004, after a short illness.
Daughter of Elsa Reaves and Lawrence Seeley, she was a lifelong resident of Norfolk. She attended Ferrum school for girls and NYU, where she studies journalism. She worked in her mothers flower shop in the City Market in downtown Norfolk when she was a young woman.
She later worked for the 5th Naval District as supervisor of the secretarial pool. With her second husband, Robert E. Furman Sr., she was co-owner of Furmanite Sales Co. and served on the board of Furmanite America Inc.
She was a champion of just and ethical causes, quietly determined to adhere to her lifelong ideals of generosity and service to the arts and humanities, including animals, especially cats. She was a kind and thoughtful person who will be missed by her many friends and family.
She is survived by her sister, Alma McDaniel of Charlotte, N.C.; her beloved daughter, local artist Beverly S. Furman and her husband Albert Markowitz; her grandchildren, Linda (Greg) Immler of Jacksonville, Fla., Robert (Teresa) Furman III of Chesapeake, Lisa (Bud) Wolfson of Jacksonville, Fla., Laura (Ian) Reagan of Norfolk and Lauras father William Hoddinott of Chesapeake; niece, Audrey Schultz (Paul) of Charlotte, N.C.; and eight great-grandchildren, Bryant Furman, Jacob Wolfson, Alex Wolfson, Jared Wolfson, Andrew Reagan, Eric Immler, Grace Reagan, Ally Wolfson; and her two cats, Poppy and Pippy Lilywhiskers.
A memorial service will be conducted Saturday at 4 p.m. in the Norfolk chapel of H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Colonial Avenue. Though she loved flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Little Theater of Norfolk.
