Dramatics teacher, actor
Muriel Seelye Heineman, a retired dramatics teacher and actor, died of kidney failure March 24 at Collington Episcopal Life Care Community in Mitchellville. The longtime Bolton Hill resident was 83.
She was born Muriel Seelye in Beirut, Lebanon, where her parents were teaching. Her brother, Talcott W. Seelye, had been U.S. ambassador to Lebanon and Syria before his death in 2006.
She attended Bennington College. She later worked with Spanish refugee children in France and Spain with the American Friends Service Committee shortly after World War II.
She lived in Washington, D.C., and worked at the U.S. Information Agency and the National Geographic Society. During that time, she was active in local theater.
After moving to Baltimore's Bolton Street in the early 1960s, Ms. Heineman taught drama and literature at Villa Julie College, now Stevenson University, from 1971 to 2004. In 1991, when the college presented her with the President's Medal, she was honored as "a uniquely perceptive explorer of inner and outer spaces."
Plans for a memorial service are incomplete.
Survivors include two sons, Tyl Heineman and Bruno Heineman, both of Baltimore; a sister, Mary Averett Seelye of Mitchellville; and a granddaughter. Her marriage of 17 years to architect Tom Heineman ended in divorce.
