Retired teacher dies in Newberg

Former Eugene resident Kathryn Seelye Mathews died Feb. 3 in Newberg at age 82. Private burial services are pending at the Laurel Hill Pioneer Cemetery in Eugene.

Mathews graduated from Eugene High School and attended Oregon Normal School in Monmouth before completing her teacher training at Southern Normal School in Ashland in 1929.

She taught at schools in Sheridan, Bandon, Veneta and Mapleton in Oregon, and at a Presbyterian mission in Wrangell, Alaska.

Mathews retired in 1966. Her husband, Odyne Mathews, died in Eugene a year later. She moved to McMinnville in 1967 and was living in Yamhill at the time of her death.

Mathews was a member of the Oregon Education Association, Eugene’s Central Presbyterian Church and Veneta’s Central Grange.

Mathews was preceded in death by her brothers, Franklin Seelye of King City, who died in 1973, and Donald Seelye of Eugene, who died in 1984; by her sister, Joannah Shreeve of Boulder City, Nev., who died in 1974; and by her oldest son, David Mathews of Kirkland, Wash., who died in 1984.

She is survived by her daughter, Marcia Rau of Yamhill; by her sons, Richard Mathews of Vancouver, Wash., and Ralph Mathews of Edmonds, Wash.; and by 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Her family suggests that remembrances be sent to the Scholarship Fund, Beta Alpha Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma, in care of 215 S. Everest, Newberg, OR 97132.
