Doris Seeley Pettengill, 86, died peacefully in her sleep on May 4 at Akron General Medical Center. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend who will be missed by the many people who loved her.

Born Doris Evelyn McNeal on Aug. 12, 1912, in Old Washington, Ohio, she married Frank Seeley of Peninsula, where they lived and raised four children. She was known for her wry sense of humor, her estimable bridge playing, and her concern for the poor people of the earth. She worked at the Summit County Welfare Department for 24 years, where she was the director of community relations, and she will be remembered as the co-founder of Good Neighbors, a charitable organization in Akron. In 1997 her name was placed on the wall of the Women's Hall of Fame in Seneca Falls, N.Y.

After the death of her husband in 1972 and her retirement in 1977, she married Homer Pettengill, longtime executive director of the East Akron Community House. They would have celebrated their 20th anniversary this May 19.

Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Seeley; and their infant son, Jon David Seeley. She leaves behind her beloved husband, Homer Pettengill; daughters, Mona (Edward G.) Ruoff of Peninsula, Kay Hoffman (Dale Albers) of Lexington, Ky., Linda Seeley (Michael Wollman) of San Luis Obispo, Calif.; son, Larry Seeley (Katheryn Nash) of Washington, D.C.; 13 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

Doris was a remarkable human being. She lives on because she gave so much to so many. Her children are blessed to have her as their mother and teacher.

Visitation will be held at Johnson-Romito, a Golden Rule Funeral Home, 19 E. Main St., Hudson, Ohio (330-650-4181), from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, May 9. The funeral service will be held at the Peninsula United Methodist Church on Monday, May 10, at 11 a.m. Rev. Lea Mahan will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations will be gratefully accepted by Good Neighbors, 1453 Goodyear Blvd., Akron 44305.
