WESLEY ADAMS CILLEY, R.P.A. BURLINGTON

- Wesley Adams Cilley, R.P.A., of Burlington died peacefully Friday, Feb. 22, 2002, in the Vermont Respite House. He was born in Cambridge, Mass., on Dec. 28, 1915, the son of Jay Wesley and Lilian (Adams) Cilley. Oct. 28, 1939, he married Barbara Sanford Rowe of Newbury, N.H. He is survived by his wife of 62 years; four children, JoAnn Barbara Stringfellow and her husband, William Ewing Stringfellow, of North Bend, Wash., John (Jack) Wesley Cilley and his wife, Charlotte, of Laconia, N.H., David Arthur Cilley and his wife, Judith, of Hong Kong, Laura Jean Cilley and her husband, Omar Bouchard, of Danvers, Mass.; nine grandchildren; and eight greatgrandchildren. His sister, Dorothy Cilley of Melrose, Mass., predeceased him. He attended public schools in Melrose and Andover, Mass. He also attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was a member of Beta chapter of Theta Chi fraternity. He and his family had resided in Melrose and Melrose Highlands and moved to Burlington in 1949. He served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corps for three years during World War II as an armament and chemical warfare officer in Tampa, Fla.; Baton Route, La.; and Saipan, Mariana Islands. He was employed by Sears, Roebuck and Co. in various capacities for eight years in the mail order house in Brookline, Mass., and as the resident auditor of that company's retail stores in Burlington and St. Johnsbury. For three years, he was business manager of the Burlington Daily News and the Vermont Sunday News. For 29 years, he practiced as a registered public accountant in Burlington, South Burlington and St. Albans, retiring July 1, 1981. His hobbies were stamp collecting, playing the trumpet, ballroom dancing, model railroading, traveling and contract bridge. He was a member of the First Congregational Church, where he served as a deacon and choir member, and on various committees. He served as master, treasurer, and 13 years as secretary of Burlington Lodge 100, F&AM.; treasurer and Past Grand Senior Deacon of the Grand Lodge of Masons in Vermont, and treasurer of the Scottish Rite. He served as director of the Burlington YMCA. He had been a member of York Rite, Past Masters Association, Mount Sinai Temple, AAONMS, and the Lake Champlain Chamber of Commerce. He served as secretary of the Burlington Exchange Club, treasurer of the Rotary Club of Burlington (10 years), and was a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow. He had been president of the Vermont Society of Public Accountants, president of the New England States Association of Public Accountants, treasurer of Interfaith Senior Citizens, governor of the Society of Colonial Wars in the state of Vermont, and a member of the Vermont State Board of Public Accountancy. Following retirement, he was a member of the Champlain Valley chapter of the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE) and received its Platinum Leadership Award for outstanding service. He was also a member of the Champlain Valley chapter of the National Railroad Historical Society, serving a term as chairman.

He had also been a member of the Boy Scouts of America, Burlington Lodge 916, B.P.O.E. Elks, National Society of Public Accountants, Burlington Lake Champlain Chamber of Commerce, Dance Club, and the Burlington chapter of the National Association of Accountants. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church of Burlington or the Vermont Respite House in Williston. A memorial service will be held Thursday, Feb. 28, at 2 p.m. in the First Congregational Church of Burlington. Corbin and Palmer Funeral Home, 71 S. Union St., Burlington, is in charge of arrangements.
