UPTON - William A. Cilley, 68, died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009, at his home after an illness.

He was the husband of Anita (Monica) Cilley and a retired science teacher for the Mendon-Upton Regional School District.

Mr. Cilley was born in Winchendon, a son of the late H. Norman and Florence (Perham) Cilley. He graduated from Barre High School in 1959 and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, N.Y., in 1963. He sailed many years for the Moore McCormick Lines, ending with a rank of first mate.

After leaving sailing upon his marriage, he earned a teaching degree from Framingham State College and a master's in education from Worcester State. He taught at Nipmuc Regional High School for 30 years and was the science department head when he retired in 2001. He also was a part-time police officer for the Town of Upton and Cub Master of Pack 132 for many years.

In addition to his wife of 38 years, he leaves two sons, William D. Cilley and his wife, Meghan, of Northbridge, and Christopher J. Cilley and his wife, Carrie, of Upton; siblings, Beatrice Stem of Shrewsbury, the Rev. Norman Cilley and his wife, Nadine, of Auburndale, Fla., Donald Cilley and his wife, Paula, of Cheshire, Conn., Paul Cilley and his wife, Nancy, of Barre, and Mildred Metcalfe of Barre; and three grandchildren, Monica and Nicole Cilley of Upton, and Reese Cilley of Northbridge.

A funeral service was on Wednesday, Jan. 28, at 11 a.m., at the Williams-Pedersen Funeral Home, 45 Main St., Upton.
