Horace J. Seeley was born in Olin, Jones Co., IA, on October 20, 1854, and died at the home of Elmer Brune northwest of Correctionville on June 14, 1922, about 10 a.m. He was 67 years, 7 months and 25 days of age. He resided in Jones County until about 35 years ago when he moved to the vicinity of Correctionville. During this time he was married to Martha E. Paul of Springville, Iowa, on January 10, 1878. To this union there were born seven children, two of whom with the mother have preceded him in death. The five who remain are Mrs. Ida Higley of Correctionville, Mrs. Josie Bryson of Onawa, Mrs. Jennie Stebbins and Charley Seeley of Correctionville and Albert Seeley of Sioux city. There are 11 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren, plus 2 brothers, Fred of Riverdale, Kansas, and Will of Anamosa, Iowa, and a sister, Mrs. Harriett Leslie of eastern Iowa. He has lived near Correctionville nearly all the time since his arrival here 35 years ago. Quite a number of years ago he united with the Methodist Church and was lately reclaimed in meetings in Sioux City. He seemed to be in comparatively good health until Tuesday morning, when he took sick suddenly while working on the Elmer Brune farm. He grew worse quickly. Surgical skill could not be applied as the condition was past remedying or relieving. Tender care was given through the night and he died quietly, asking for loved ones and minister. He suffered much during the night, being unconscious part of the time, but became easier and rallied toward morning, regaining consciousness for a little while, when he told them he was ready to go. Complications of bowel, stomach, gall bladder and liver trouble caused his sudden departure. He was always known as a hard worker, in his endeavor to rear his family in days when wages weren't high. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. J.S. Deedrick in the Methodist church and burial was made in the Correctionville Cemetery.
