Seeley, Margaret (Peggy)

Margaret (Peggy) J. Seeley of Parke Lane, Jacksonville, passed away on August 21, 2015 at home. Peggy was born in New Haven, Connecticut, the daughter of the late Winifred Talmadge and George Welles Johnson. She attended schools in New Haven and in Hamden, Connecticut, and was a graduate of the Larson Junior College, now Quinnipiac College, and of the University of Connecticut where she also did graduate work in English Literature. Peggy had been a staff member of the Yale Sterling Library, the University of Connecticut Library and the Cornell Public Library, after moving to Ithaca with her family. She had been a 4-H leader in Jacksonville and a member of the County 4-H Council. She was the director of recreation in the Pediatric Unit of the Tompkins County Hospital for several years. For over 25 years, Peggy enjoyed teaching English-as-a-2nd language to foreign students and visiting faculty in the Cornell Campus Club program.

Peggy was a painter in different media and exhibited locally and on Block Island where she and her husband had a summer home for many years. She had been a member of the former Ithaca Art Association, the Upstairs Gallery and the Spring Street Gallery on Block Island, RI.

She was a member of the Friends of the Ithaca Public Library, of the Philomathic Library of Trumansburg, the Block Island Library, the Block Island Historical Society and the Block Island French Club which she founded. Peggy was a member of many environmental organizations and also a Freedom Writer for prisoners of conscience for Amnesty International. She was a member of the Senior Citizens' Council and participated in their activities. She was a member of the Ithaca Unitarian Church and of the Cornell Campus Club.

Peggy enjoyed gardening, hiking, sailing and traveling with her family during her husband's sabbatical leaves from Cornell University and on many other trips in Europe, Hawaii, the Caribbean, Canada and the U.S.A.

Besides her husband, Prof. Harry W. Seeley, she leaves two daughters, Gail Fox of New Brunswick, Canada, and Carol (Dan) Seeley-Teboe, of Boulder, Colorado; two grandsons, Jason (Vanessa) Fox and Timothy (Kazuko) Fox. She was pre-deceased by a beloved daughter, Beth.

Honoring Peggy's wishes, there will be no service or calling hours. Commitment will be at the family's convenience. In lieu of flowers, one may contribute to the Trumansburg Philomathic Library, an environmental society or the charity of one's choice .
