Marion was born in Lynn, MA, the fifth of ten children born to Clayton and Mildred (Campbell) Gates. An irrepressible character throughout her life, Marion had countless funny stories about growing up as one of ten children in a family of humble means. Her innate sense of humor, and the tenacity she retained as a child of difficult circumstances, would serve Marion well throughout her life as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, nurse and friend. Marion endured many hardships in her life, including the loss of her husband in 1954, when she was only 37 years old, but she overcame them with hard work, determination and laughter. Marion was quick to make others comfortable with a joke and created lifelong friendships wherever she went. She raised her family in Cambridge and was a well-known member of the community and of numerous civic organizations there. Most notably, Marion was a longtime member of the Women's Auxillary of the American Legion's Sullivan Post and the Cambridge Little League. She was an elected officer multiple times in both organizations and served in many positions, including secretary, treasurer and president of each. Marion's nursing career spanned six-and-a-half decades - and during that time she provided skilled and dignified care to thousands of patients.
