Sarah Jane Seeley

Longtime Bryan County resident, Sarah Jane Seeley, age 97, died Wednesday, January 23, at The Homestead in Sherman, TX. She was born October 3, 1915, in Cottonwood, OK, the second of the fourteen children of the late Archie Jane (McKillip) and Will Edwards. She graduated from Coalgate High School in 1931. On November 25, 1935, she married Nello Ray Seeley of Durant, OK and lived north of Durant on Seeley Hill for over seventy years of her life.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Durant and in her younger years was active in many aspects of church ministry. She was a member of the Goodwill Home Demonstration Club and served several terms as president of the group. She loved to sew garments and can fruits and vegetables for the Bryan County fair, and was a favorite judge at neighboring county fairs. She was a member of the Bryan County Fair board and for many years was Superintendent of the Women's Department at the County Fair. She also sought and promoted ways in which her group could better serve the community, such as purchasing bulletproof vests for the Durant Police Department. She was an exceptional cook and family members will retain happy memories of sitting at her table sampling her creations, especially the rolls, pies, cakes, and casseroles.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Ray Seeley, son, David Ray Seeley, and daughter Gail June Hudson; son-in-law, Grant Rember; grandsons Grant Ray Rember and Michael David Seeley; granddaughter Lacie Rae Whitlock; brothers W. W. Edwards, George Franklin Edwards, Joe David Edwards, John Edward Edwards, Hugh Elmer Edwards, Louis Gene Edwards, James Albert Edwards, and Carl Lee Edwards; sisters Mary Dee Purser and Patricia Ann Poindexter; infant sister, Margaret Edwards and infant brother, Archie Edwards; brother-in-law Colby Poindexter; sisters-in-law Minnie Edwards, Loretta Edwards, Naomi Edwards, Elizabeth Edwards, Doris Edwards, and Cora Edwards; nephews William Ray Edwards and John Timothy Edwards.

Sarah Jane is survived by daughters, Morra Jane Rember of Brinnon, WA, and Susan Janelle Morrow of Sherman, TX; grandchildren: Deborah June Bryant, Lewisville, TX, John Alan Hudson and wife, Mitzi, Mesquite, TX, Kathryn Ann Billings and husband, Richard, McKinney, TX, David Wesley Morrow and wife, Chelsey, Sherman, TX, and Jacob Ryan Rember and wife, Lynette, Brinnon, WA; and ten great-grandchildren. One sister, Betty Wiltsie of Springfield, VA, brothers-in-law, Russell Wiltsie, Springfield, VA, and Glenn Purser, North Hills, CA, sisters-in-law Yvonne Kirby, Stockton, MO and Tommye Edwards, Silver Lakes, CA, and several nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends, also survives her.

Family hour for Sarah Jane will be Tuesday, January 29, 1:00 p.m., at Holmes-Coffey-Murray Funeral Home, followed by funeral services at 2:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. The Reverend Jim Shroyer and The Reverend Ross Kirven will officiate. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery, Durant. Serving as pallbearers will be Wes Morrow, Steven Waddles, Bill Remshardt, Rick Billings, John A. Hudson, and John W. Hudson.

Funeral services are under the direction of Holmes-Coffey-Murray Funeral Home, Durant, Oklahoma.
