Second WPA Man Seriously Hurt At Botzum

A WPA worker, deputized by Sheriff Jim Flower to guard dynamite, was killed and another worker was injured seriously late Friday in an accidental explosion near the Botzum sewage disposal plant.

The dead man is Ernest Seeley, 28, of 491 Beacon st., and the injured laborer is Hill J. Parshall, of R.D. 7.

The tragedy occurred when the two men were attempting to destroy some dynamite that, due to cold, had been acting improperly. A box containing 24 sticks of the explosive had been cast on a fire when the detonation let loose that rocked the neighborhood for a radius of half a mile.

Seeley was badly battered about the head and shoulders. Rushed to St. Thomas hospital, he died six hours after the blast, which took place at 5:15 p.m. Parshall was injured less seriously and was reported in good condition at the hospital today.

Seeley and eight other workers, including Parshall, had been deputized by Sheriff Flower to maintain a guard on the dynamite store, used by the WPA, after “wild rumors” had been heard in connection with the strike at Goodyear.

Seeley and Parshall, however, were the only ones in the vicinity of the fire when the explosion came. The detonation tore a hole eight feet deep in the ground.
