Greece, N.Y. —

The memory of Seal the Clown won't be forgotten, if his friends have any say.

Seal, known out of costume as Floyd Seeley, was a clown for nearly 30 years before he died in April at the age of 76.

A member of the Grease Paint Alley clowns, the Brockport resident starting clowning in the 1970s after his daughter, Debbie, died of cancer.

Besides being a performer, Mr. Seeley was known for organizing a fun day for children with special needs from area schools at the Spencerport Firemen's Carnival. The children would take a bus to the Firemen's Field and enjoy rides and lunch. Before they left, Mr. Seeley would give them each a stuffed animal he had collected during the year.

His fellow clowns and firefighters want to continue that kindness in his memory. They did so this year at the festival, held in June. The clowns collected stuffed animals and served up lunch. The firefighters wore shirts with a sad-looking clown that read: "In Memory of Seal the Clown For the Kids He Loved."

"Everyone had a great day and Grease Paint Alley Clowns and Spencerport firemen will be doing the 'Seal Day' every (year) from now on," said Jean D. Federico, the Grease Paint Alley business manager, in a tribute she wrote in honor of Mr. Seeley.

The event was attended by 99 kids this year, said clown Dean "Heyseed" Marsaw of Greece.

Over the years, Mr. Seeley also organized parties for the Lion's Club in Spencerport to help visually impaired youth and for children afflicted with spina bifida and their families, Marsaw said. Mr. Seeley handpicked the clowns who assisted him, he said.

"He was a very well-known clown and person going around doing things for these special people, who he called special friends," he said.

A table would be spread out at the carnival with at least 200 stuffed animals and the children could select their own when they left.

"This was the type of guy he was and people gave him stuffed animals from all over. He had bags and bags of stuffed animals," Marsaw said.

His presence was even requested by other towns and places like hospitals and schools.

"Fantastic person," Marsaw said of his friend. "I really miss him a lot."
