Former City Manager Dies

George W. Seeley, 72, Tucson city manager in 1940, died yesterday in Benson where he had lived since 1946.

Seeley served as city manager here in 1940-41 before resigning to serve with the Army in World War II.

He also was city field engineer here in 1931, commissioner of streets from 1931 to 1937, and city engineer.

Seeley founded the American Legion Post in Benson and was director of the town’s civil defense program. He also served as chairman of the Cochise County draft board.

He earned two varsity letters at the University of Arizona in 1915 and 1916. He played football and captained the freshman track and basketball teams. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.

Seeley’s affiliations included Morgan McDermott post of the American Legion, 1934 commander; American Association of Engineers; Society of American Military Engineers; Reserve Officers Association; Tucson Engineers Club; Tucson Chamber of Commerce and Kiwanis Club.

Seeley was born in Ramirana, Tex. And moved to Douglas in 1902.

He is survived by his widow Catherine Jane.

Services will be held in Benson at 4 p.m. Monday. Burial will be in Cochise Gardens Memorial Park.
