Retired Army Man Dies Unexpectedly

Colonel Harland Fisher Seeley, Joplin Resident Two Years, Succumbs to Heart Attack

Colonel Harland Fisher Seeley, 55 years old, 721 ½ West Seventh street, died unexpectedly after suffering a heart attack yesterday morning. He was taken to St. John’s hospital and pronounced dead upon arrival at 8:30 o’clock. Born in Elmira, N.Y., he moved to Joplin two years ago from Dubuque, Ia., where he was the commander of an R.O.T.C. unit.

Colonel Seeley was retired July 31 after serving in the regular army since in received his commission as a second lieutenant on August 15, 1917. During World War I, he served with the Ninth infantry of the Second division and was in the battles of St. Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne and Chateau-Thierry.

He was a member of the Alzafar Achbar Temple of San Antonio, Elks lodge No. 62, B.P.O.E., at Elmira, Queen City lodge No. 592, I.O.O.F., at Elmira, Scottish Rite Masons of San Antonio and the Charles S. Harrison post No. 35 of the American legion at Columbus, Ga. He was married April 16, 1940, in the Philippine islands. Surviving is his widow, Mrs. Florence Seeley of the home.

The body was received by the Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary. A military funeral service and burial will be conducted at the Arlington National cemetery in Arlington, Va.

COL. SEELEY TO BE GIVEN FULL MILITARY RITES

Full military rites for Colonel Harlan Fisher Seeley, 55 years old, who died unexpectedly Monday morning after suffering a heart attack, will be conducted Thursday morning at Arlington National cemetery in Arlington, Va. The body was sent to Washington, D.C., last night.

Death Takes Col. Seeley

A native Elmiran, Col. Harland Seeley, 55, of Joplin, Mo., died Monday of a heart attack.

Col. Seeley was born in Elmira and attended School 3 (Parley Coburn) and the Elmira Free Academy. He was the son of George and Millie Gornee Seeley, who lived on Mr. Zoar St.

He served with Co. L. He entered federal service in December, 1916, and was overseas during World War I. Continuing in the Army, he was on duty in the Southwest and in Washington. His foreign service included two years in Porto Rico and 4 ½ years in the Philippines. He returned to the states in June 1941.

He was an instructor at Ft. Leonard Wood and Camp Crowder and was professor of military science and tactics at Loras Academy, Dubuque, Iowa. He served on the retirement board at O’Reilly General Hospital, Springfield, Mo.

Col. Seeley retired July 31, 1947.

Harland F. Seeley Promoted by Army

Harland F. Seeley, formerly of Elmira, son of the late Nellie G. Seeley, 310 Mt. Zoar St., 20 years ago had been promoted to lieutenant colonel and assigned to the 156th Regiment in Louisiana. Col. Seeley, well known as “Hod,” had been in the Regular Army since outbreak of the First World War.
