Harold Seeley, Power Company Official Dies

Harold K. Seeley, 300 Hickok av., general superintendent of gas operations for the Central New York Power Corporation, died suddenly at Port Alleghany, Pa., at 10:30 P.M. Wednesday.

Mr. Seeley had gone to Port Alleghany to attend a meeting on matters pertaining to the company’s natural gas business. With him in his hotel room when he died were A. Dean Dudley and John T. Kimball, officials of the company.

Mr. Seeley was in his 37th year of continuous service with Central New York Power and its predecessor companies. His long career in the gas business had made him widely known in both the manufactured and natural gas industries.

Mr. Seeley was born at Great Barrington, Mass, on Oct. 3, 1888. After graduation from the high school there, he entered Cornell University, and was graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering.

He began his utility career as a street clerk with the United Gas Improvement Co. at Philadelphia, in 1910. After successively becoming foreman of various departments, he was made assistant superintendent of distribution in 1913. Three years later, he was advanced to superintendent of gas production for the Allentown Gas Company.

From 1917 to 1919, Mr. Seeley served in the Chemical Warfare Service, advancing from private to second lieutenant. After his return from overseas, Mr. Seeley resumed his post at the Allentown Gas Company and in 1920 was transferred to the Des Moines (Iowa) Gas Company, as engineer in charge of manufacture. Two years later he was made assistant to the general superintendent of all U.G.I. gas plants.

It was in April, 1926, that Mr. Seeley came to Syracuse as superintendent of production for the Syracuse Lighting Company, Inc., then a member of the U.G.I. system. When the Syracuse company merged with others to form the present Central New York Power, he was placed in charge of gas production and distribution throughout the company’s territory. Under his direction were gas plants and facilities in Syracuse, Utica, Watertown, Oswego, Rome, Ogdensburg and Malone.

Mr. Seeley was a professional engineer, a member of the Cornell Club of Syracuse, Engineers Club, American Gas Association C.N.Y.P. 25 Year Club, Onondaga Yacht Club, Syracuse Rose Society, American Legion and Chamber of Commerce. He was an organizer of the drum and bugle corps of Boy Scout Troop 42 Eastwood.

Mr. Seeley is survived by his wife, Lila Belle Seeley; a son, Wallace Ryman and Louise G. Seeley, a sister. The funeral will he held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, at 10 A.M. Saturday. Friends may call at the Welter funeral home, 2649 James st., from 3 to 5 and from 7 to 9 o’clock on Friday. Burial will be in Morningside Cemetery.
