DR. JAMES SEELEY LONGTIME SURGEON

Dr. James J. Seeley, a retired surgeon and volunteer with the American Cancer Society, died Sunday (June 16, 2002) at his home in south St. Louis County. He was 75.

A native of St. Louis, Dr. Seeley attended St. Louis University and earned his medical degree from St. Louis University School of Medicine in 1952. He served in the Army during World War II.

Dr. Seeley served on the staff of St. Anthony's Medical Center for 39 years, retiring in 1996. He was chief of surgery for six years and president of the medical staff for two years.

For more than 40 years, Dr. Seeley was a volunteer with the American Cancer Society and served as president of both the Missouri and St. Louis regional chapters. He was a frequent guest on local television and radio programs to promote public awareness on cancer's warning signs.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Kutis Affton Chapel, 10151 Gravois Road. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Thursday at St. Gabriel the Archangel Church, 6303 Nottingham Avenue, St. Louis. Burial will be at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.

Among the survivors are his wife of 49 years, Gertrude Seeley; a son, James Seeley III of St. Louis; three daughters, Seely Gerraughty of Narragansett, R.I., Elizabeth Seeley of Baltimore and Margaret Criscione of College Station, Texas; a sister, Mary Jane Morgan of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.; and four grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the St. Anthony's Medical Center Tribute Fund or to the American Cancer Society.
