Joe Seeley Laid to Rest With Friends’ Tribute

Joe Seeley, east side character and “mayor of Schenk’s corners,” was laid to rest beside his wife who preceded him in death in 1924, in Forest Hill cemetery this morning.

The Rev. John Risch, assistant pastor of St. Bernard’s church, conducted service at the Schroeder funeral parlors and friends filed by the coffin to pay their last tributes.

Final rites and prayer were conducted at the grave by Edward Lynch and Robert Armstrong.

East side business men who acted as pallbearers were Herb Schenk, Matt Zwank, Marshall Browne, A.S. Lerdahl, A.M. Toussaint, and Olaf Stand.

Joe Seeley, Injured by Auto, Dies

Joe Seeley, 48, Schenk’s corners, died Wednesday night from injuries received when he was struck by a car Monday.

He was hit by a machine driven by Clarence Eckert, Sun Prairie insurance man, and former Madison policeman, on the Sun Prairie road at the junction with highway 51.

Eckert swerved to avoid another car and struck Seeley, who was walking down the road, it was reported to police. Seeley was taken to a Madison hospital where his leg was found to be broken.

The driver of the car was not held.

Seeley was a well-known east side character, the victim of mass pranks by joke-loving friends. This past spring he was run for “mayor of Schenk’s corners.”

For several years he lived in a small cottage on the east side. One day the jokesters filled the chimney with waste and when Seeley lit the fire the room filled with smoke.

Out he rushed, grip and all, with the smoke pouring out of the windows and doors.

“Where are you going, Joe” a friends asked as he sped down the street.

“To China,” Seeley flung back.

He never returned to the cottage but has lived in various other places doing odd jobs about the east side.
