LONG ISLAND Marie Seeley, 90, 'Candy Lady' to children

Marie Seeley, a lifelong Freeport resident, spent most of her life in the Harrison Avenue house her father built.

Seeley, born Marie Vollmer, where she was known among her neighbors for her kindness to children and animals alike, died Nov. 27 at age 90.

"Students often asked if my mom was the 'Candy Lady,'" said her son, Jim Seeley, a retired Freeport High School English teacher. "They remember her as the person they could count on for an afternoon treat."

Marie Seeley also was known for her own neighborhood beautification program.

"She would walk all over. She never drove a car," said her son, who lives in Long Beach.

"She would clean up the neighborhood as she went along. Anything she saw she would pick it up and encouraged others to do the same to keep things nice," he added.

He said his mother rode her bike around the neighborhood into her early 70s, and walked briskly to the village in her 80s.

Seeley also enjoyed tending her garden, especially her raspberry patch.

"Mom lived a good life. She was a true individual and never met anyone she didn't like or at least could not talk to," another son, John Seeley, of Freeport, said.

She graduated from Freeport High School in 1933 and then attended a nursing program at New York City's Bellevue Hospital, where she graduated in 1937. That same year she married Lester Seeley, a Grumman employee. She never practiced as a nurse.

Seeley, who was cremated, was predeceased by her husband in 1983. In addition to her sons, she is survived by three grandchildren, seven great-grand children, and three great-great-grand children.
