Ronald D. "Ron" Seeley

On the afternoon of Wednesday, May 11, 2011, lifelong Canton area resident Ronald Douglas Seeley passed away unexpectedly at his residence.

Born in Blossburg on Jan. 15, he was the son of Douglas Seeley and Dottie (Gottschall) Seeley. Even as a youth Ron seemed destined to a life of service and helping others. He worked after school and weekends on the Harris farm just down the road from his home. However in his free time Ron served his community as a junior cadet police officer. He used to assist in finding missing persons. He seemed to have a sixth sense and often was successful where others had failed.

Ron had a special respect for his father, a police chief, as well as the other members of the family who served as volunteers to the community. He possessed an awareness for the importance of fulfilling one's duties. Following his graduation from Canton High School Ron entered the construction trade, and one of the first venues where he practiced his trade was Mt. Pisgah State Park. He was proud of his many improvements to the park's infrastructure and landscape. Still set on serving others, Ron volunteered as an ambulance driver for Western Alliance Emergency Services and joined the Canton Fire Department, rising to the rank of assistant chief.

He also qualified to become a fire warden, Ron was never one to shrink in the face of danger, always willing to engage the inferno head on. He was selected Fire Fighter of the Year for his efforts in rescuing a young child and an elderly man. He always said that what mattered to him most was the saving of a human life. He still found time for four-wheeling and fishing, and enjoyed the time spent with his children. He was a devoted father and a true and loyal friend to all who knew him.

Ron is survived by his loving wife Joyce (Motz) Seeley; father Doug Seeley; mother Dottie Seeley; grandmother Mary Gottschall; son Damien Seeley, age 2, of Roaring Branch; daughters Angel Seeley, age 10, of Roaring Branch, Hailey Seeley, age 6, of Roaring Branch, Samantha Seeley, age 18, of Florida; brother Jeremy Seeley of Texas; niece Ashley Seeley and several other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Ashley Seeley, age 12; grandfather Floyd W. Gottschall; uncle Robert "Bob" Gotschall; niece Tracy Gotschall; great-grandparents Leon and Marion Kriner; brother-in-law Michael Motz; great-grandparents Clarence and Anna Seeley; grandfather Harold Seeley; and grandmother Betty Benedict Seeley Heasley.
