R.E. Seeley Dies at 85 after Illness

Roy E. Seeley, 85, of 98 W. Division St., died at 5:10 a.m. today at the Fond du Lac Lutheran Home, following a six week illness.

Friends may call at the Candlish Funeral Chapel from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Cathedral Church of St. Paul, with the Very Rev. John E. Gulick officiating. Burial will be in Avoca Cemetery, Oakfield.

Born in Fond du Lac, April 8, 1885, he was the eldest of three sons of Edward A. Seeley and the former Emily Jones.

His adolescent summers were spent in Hartford working for his grandfather in the Hartford Plow Works, which in later years became the Foundry Division of the now extinct, Kissell Motor Car Co.

He served as chief engineer of the “electric light plant” in Waupaca, Chilton and the old Eastern Wisconsin Electric Light Co., now Wisconsin Power & Light Co. He also was employed at the old TMER & L Co. in Milwaukee.

For a period of time he was chief engineer of a U.S. Government conveyor dredge on the Upper Fox River reportedly the first such unit on U.S. waters.

In 1910, he married Louise Kratsch. They had one son, Charles E. Seeley who lives in New Richmond.

Mr. Seeley also served as wire chief for the Wisconsin Telephone Co. and served as telephone exchange manager in Oconto until his retirement in 1945. Mr. and Mrs. Seeley resided for a time in Milwaukee and Oakfield, returning to Fond du Lac in 1958.

He was a member of St. Paul’s Cathedral, Fond du Lac Lodge 140 F & AM, a past noble grand and 50-year member of Fond du Lac Lodge 30, IOOF, and the Retired Telephone Employes of America. While residing in Oconto, he was a member of the Kiwanis Club, serving as secretary for a time.

Funeral services for Roy E. Seeley, who died Saturday, were held at 10:30 a.m. at Cathedral Church of St. Paul.

The Rt. Rev. William H. Brady and Very Rev. John E. Gulock officiated. Acolytes were Edward Jewson and William Smithers. Burial took place in Avoca Cemetery, Oakfield.

Honorary bearers from Wisconsin Telephone Co., were Oscar C. Claus, Henry Jones, Walter Scaefer, M.C. Hoaglund, Harold Courtney and Frank Gilbo.

Active bearers were Donald Kliest, W. Elmer Kuehn, George Lueder, H.J. Lovejoy, Manville Perry and Thomas DeWitt.
