RETIRED ARMY GENERAL SAM F. SEELEY, 84, DIES

Sam Foster Seeley, 84, a retired Army brigadier general who had been chief of the professional services division of the Army Surgeon General's Office, died of complications from a pulmonary embolism Sept 11 at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

Gen. Seeley worked in retirement for the National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences, where his duties involved bringing federal and academic medical communities together to share knowledge in the fields of shock and trauma management. He had written extensively on wound surgery and vascular repair. His work on intra-arterial transfusions is said to have helped bring down the death rate of wounded servicemen during the Korean War.

A Washington resident, Gen. Seeley was born in Palmer, Neb. He attended the University of Nebraska and graduated from the University of Minnesota, where he also received his medical degree. He joined the Army in 1927, did his internship at Station Hospital at Fort Sam Houston, Tex., and graduated from the Army Medical School.

Before World War II, his assignments included duty in the Philippines and surgical training at the Mayo Clinic and at Walter Reed. During the war, he was executive officer for the establishment of a convalescent center for wounded servicemen at the Greenbrier Hotel in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va. He later commanded an Army hospital in France.

Postwar assignments included duty as chief of the surgical service at Walter Reed, director of the surgery division of the Army Medical Department Graduate School and commanding general of Valley Forge General Hospital. He retired from the Army Surgeon General's Office in 1958. His decorations included the Legion of Merit and the Bronze Star.

Gen. Seeley had been a resident of this area since 1957.

His wife of 58 years, Margaret Sweet Seeley, died in 1984.

Survivors include a son, retired Army Col. Sam T. Seeley of South Boston, Va., and four grandchildren.
