A lifelong resident of Millerton, Elmira, and Waverly went to be with the Lord on Monday December 23, 2013 at Arnot-Ogden Medical Center following declining health at the age of 81. Born on July 10, 1932 in Elmira, John was the son of the late Tylee and Flossie Purvis Seely. He was employed by Friends Research Lab, Waverly, NY as a lab technician. His interests included a fond appreciation for music, enjoying many hours listening to the works of classical composers. He had a great interest in horticulture, growing plants and hybridizing orchids in his greenhouse during his younger years. He was an elder at Bethany Fellowship in Waverly and later at Christian Fellowship in Horseheads.

Surviving is his loving family, nephew and caregiver, David and Sandra Hogancamp, Pine City, several other nephews and nieces and an aunt, Alice Purvis. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his sister Philoma Seely Hogancamp and brother James Seely. In honor of his wishes all services will be handled privately at the family's convenience with interment in Alder Run Cemetery.
