Jesse R. Seely, aged 76 years, of Knoxville, died at the Arnot-Ogden Hospital in Elmira June 24. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Florence Osborn Seely, and a sister, Mrs. Jania Robertson, of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; a niece, Geraldine Smith, of Elmira, and nephew, Glen Robertson, of New York.

He was born April 14, 1874, in Brookfield, son of the late George and Nettie Hunt Seely. He was married to Florence Osborn, of Addison, Dec. 14, 1900.

He was a member of Cowaneseque Lodge, 351, F.&A.M., of Knoxville. He joined the Coudersport Consistory in 1917 and became active, securing hundreds of new members. For his work the class of June 1921 was named in his honor. In 1927, he was elevated to the 33rd degree, the highest honor in Masonry. He was an Elder of the Knoxville Presbyterian church.

The funeral was held June 27; burial in Riverside cemetery at Knoxville, with Masonic ceremonies.

Last Rites For Jesse R. Seely

Knoxville – Jesse R. Seely, age 76 died at Arnot-Odgen Hospital after an illness of about 24 hours. He was taken ill while returning home from Coudersport Consistory where he had been in attendance for 3 days.

He was born April 14, 1874 in Brookfield Township, Pa., the son of George and Nettie Hunt Seely, both deceased. He was married to Florence Osborn of Addison, N.Y. December 14, 1900.

After farming for a short time ill health caused him to leave the farm. He moved into Knoxville where he conducted a dray business which he conducted for several years. He then went into the Insurance business which he conducted for several years. He also represented an Oil Company and traveled in several counties in Northern Pennsylvania. At the beginning of World War II he secured a position in an Aircraft factory in Elmira, N.Y. and worked during the war, after which he returned to his home and spent much of his time growing and developing gladiolus in which he had become very proficient.

He was a member and elder of the Knoxville Presbyterian Church also a member of Cowansque Lodge, F & AM, No. 351, Knoxville, Pa. Joining Coudersport Consistory November 1, 1917 where he became very much interested giving a great deal of his time in degree work at the meetings and securing hundreds of members for the organization. For his work and Loyalty the class of June, 1921m was named in his honor and on September 20, 1927 he was awarded the 33 degree by the Supreme Council for the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction of Scottish Rite Free Masonary at Boston, Mass.; the highest honor that be conferred upon a Free Mason.

His neighborly acts, pleasant smile, and congenial manner will be missed by the many who knew him.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Florence Osborn Seely; one sister, Jania Robertson of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; one niece, Geraldine Smith of Elmira, N..; one nephew, Glen Robertson of New York City.

Funeral services were held at the home on Tuesday, June 27, 1950 at 2:30 P.M. D.S.T. Rev. Wheeler, Dr. John Lewis and Rev. Henry Wray officiating. Pallbearers: R.H. Edgcomb, H.S. Leathers, Sr., Wm. Jones, Jesse Wilcox, Lee Patterson and Walter Swimley. Internment in Riverside Cemetery, Knoxville with Masonic Committal.
