Word has been received of the death of John G. Seely, 54, formerly of Walla Walla, from injuries received in an accident at the Lincoln plant of the Utah-Idaho Sugar Co. at Idaho Falls of which he was plant superintendent.

Services were held at Idaho Falls last weekend, with burial at Salt Lake City.

Seely died four days after he was injured when a front-end loader he was driving tipped over when a bank of dirt collapsed under it. He was driving the vehicle when supervisory personnel wee trying to keep the production line operating during a strike.

Seely was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and had been a bishop of the Toppenish, Wash., LDS ward. He was a Utah-Idaho representative in the Walla Walla Valley for several years.

He was born Aug. 29, 1916, at Mount Pleasant, Utah. He is survived by his widow, Dorothy; a son, John David, Idaho Falls; a daughter, Mrs. Kearns (Joan) Lawson of San Antonio, Texas; one grandchild; two brothers and two sisters.

U-I Superintendent Dies From Injuries

The superintendent of the Lincoln Plant of the Utah-Idaho Sugar Company died Monday of injuries suffered in an industrial accident at the strike-bound plant Wednesday.

John G. Seely, 54, died about 1:45 a.m. Monday from injuries he suffered when a front-end loader he was driving tipped with him at the Utah-Idaho Sugar Company plant, throwing him from the vehicle. Company official reported that the loader tipped when a bank of dirt collapsed under the vehicle.

At the time of the mishap, Seely was directing operations at the plant aimed at keeping processed sugar moving to company customers as a strike by union workers entered its second day. Some 25 non-union employes, largely supervisory employes, currently are involved in trying to move the sugar.

There was no report of progress in the contract talks from either the company or the union Monday.

John G. Seeley (sic) was born Aug. 26, 1916 at Mount Pleasant, Utah the son of Earl H. and Louie Miner Seely. He married Dorothy D. White June 14, 1941 in Salt Lake City, Utah and the marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS temple.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and had been the Bishop of the Toppenish LDS Ward at Toppenish, Wash. For three years. He had been a High Councilman in the East Midvale Stake at Midvale, Utah and at the time of his death was a High Priest in the 31st Ward in Idaho Falls.

He was a member of the Idaho Falls Rotary Club, a director of the Greater Idaho Falls Chamber of Commerce, a member of the American Society of Sugar Beet Technologists; president of the Osgood Canal Co., and a member of the Blackfoot Chamber of Commerce. He is a graduate of Utah State University.

Survivors include his widow, one son and one daughter, John David Seely of Idaho Falls and Mrs. Kearns (Joan) W. Lawson, San Antonio, Tex.; one grandchild; two brothers and two sisters, Earl L. Seely, Richland, Wash., Calvin M. Seely of Trinidad, Colo., Mrs. William E. (Maurine) Watson and Mrs. Grant (Marjorie) McGowen, both of Salt Lake City.

Funeral services for Mr. Seely will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at the 31st LDS Ward, 1165 Azalea Dr., with Bishop O.V. Handly officiating.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7:30 until 9 p.m. and one hour prior to services Thursday at Wood Funeral Home. Burial will be in Wasatch Lawn Cemetery in Salt Lake City, Utah, Thursday at 4 p.m. under the direction of Wood Funeral Home.
