Justus Frandsen Seely of Corvallis died Saturday in Portland. He was 61.

Born in Mount Pleasant, Utah, to Louis Frandsen and Justus Olson Seely, he graduated from North Sanpete High School and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Utah State University. In 1969, he earned a doctorate in physics from Iowa State University, where he received an award for being the outstanding student in statistics. He joined the statistics department at Oregon State University that year, served as director of graduate studies in statistics from 1974 to 1991 and became director of the department in 1986. He was a specialist in linear model theory.

In 1996, he became associate dean for financial affairs of the College of Science. He retired from OSU this year but was teaching part time.

He married Averil Sansom Seely June 7, 1965, in Logan, Utah.

He was a fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and of the American Statistical Association and had been elected to the International Statistical Institute. He received the College of Science Carter Award in 1977 for excellence in teaching and was a three-time recipient of the OSSSO award for “significant contribution to the educational experience of statistics students at Oregon State.”

He was a member of the Third Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and worked in Boy Scouting. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, boating, traveling, and competitive sports, especially the OSU wrestling program and sports that his children participated in.

Survivors include his wife; son, Justus of Corvallis; daughters, Heather Seely Roberts of Wilsonville and Erin Lee of Corvallis; sister, Mary Louise Seamons of Orem, Utah; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday, March 1, in the LDS Church, 1205 N.W. Walnut Blvd. A service will follow at 1 p.m. Bishop Craig Cole will officiate. A graveside service will be held Monday, March 4, in Mount Pleasant. DeMoss-Durdan Funal Home is in charge of arrangements.

Justus Frandsen Seely, age 61, passed away Saturday, 23 February 2002, in Portland, Oregon.

He was born 11 Feb. 1941 to Justus O. and Louise Frandsen Seely in Mt. Pleasant, UT. Justus attended Hamilton Elementary School, Wasatch, Academy, and graduated from North Sanpete High School. He attended Brigham Young University, then transferred to Utah State University where he received his bachelor’s and masters degrees. In 1969 he received a PhD in Statistics from Iowa State University. That same year he joined the statistics department of Oregon State University where he served in many positions, recently retiring as Associate Dean of the College of Science. On 7 June 1965 Justus married Averil Samson.

He is survived by his wife, Corvallis, OR; daughter, Heather Seely Roberts, Wilsonville, OR; son, Justus Sansom; daughter, Erin Lee, both of Corvallis; five grandchildren; and one sister, Mary Louise Seamons, Orem, UT. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services were Friday, 1 March 2002, Corvallis, OR. Graveside services will be Mon. 4 March, 2002, Mt. Pleasant City, Cemetery, 11 a.m. Directors, Mafleby-Funeral Mortuary, Mt. Pleasant, UT.
