ALGONA - Kent R. Seely, 77, of Algona died Tuesday (April 21, 2009) at the Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 2, at the First United Methodist Church in Algona, with the Rev. Steve McElroy officiating. Burial will be in Portland Township Cemetery in rural Burt.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 1, at the First United Methodist Church in Algona, with a 7:30 p.m. Masonic service.

Kent Richard Seely was born on January 10, 1932, at Algona, Iowa to Claude and Beulah Dodds Seely. He received his early schooling at the Plum Creek Country School and then graduated from the Algona High School in 1949, where he was active in FFA and had been presented the Star Farmer Award. He then attended South Dakota State College in Brookings, South Dakota for a time. Kent served his country in the U.S. Army. He was married to Alice Mathes on September 10, 1953 at the Presbyterian Church in Algona. The couple farmed north of Algona until the time of Kent’s death. They were also owners and operators of Seely’s Sno Resort on their farm from 1970 until 1974. Kent was also a seed dealer.

Kent was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Algona, where he was past president of the Administrative Board, past chair of the Parish Committee and co-chair of the can pick-up at the ABATE campgrounds.

He was very active in many agricultural groups. Kent was past assistant 4H leader, past Director of the FFA Alumni, past supporter of the DeKalb Award Schlarship, past president of the Kossuth County Cattlemen, past president of the Iowa Polled Shorthorn Association, past director of the Iowa Wool Growers Association and had been presented the Cattleman of the Year Award.

Kent loved the Kossuth County Fair and had served on the Fair BBQ Committee and was past Fair Board Director. The County Fair was dedicated to him in 1998.

In his lifetime, Kent enjoyed farming, raising livestock, riding horses and hunting. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, socializing with neighbors, family and friends. He also enjoyed watching his granddaughters participate in all of their activities. Kent was also a member of the Prudence Lodge #205 A.F. & A.M. in Algona.

Kent died on Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at the Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona, Iowa. He was 77.

Surviving are his wife, Alice of Algona, Iowa, his son Alan Seely and wife, Paula, Algona, Iowa, his daughter, Pamela Newbrough, Guthrie Center, Iowa and his 4 grandchildren, Katelyn, Lacey and Carly Seely and Ashley Newbrough. He is also survived by his sister, Claudette Slowiak and husband, Joe, Phoenix, Arizona, his niece, Karen Graham and husband, Jack, Chandler, Arizona and his nephew, Jim Griggs, Scottsdale, Arizona. He was preceded in death by his parents.
