Morene Ethel Seely
1916-2002
Morene Ethel Seely, of Spearfish, S.D. died Friday, April 5, 2002, at the David M. Dorsett Health Care Center in Spearfish. She was 85.
She was born in Hughes County, S.D. on Oct. 21, 1916, to Carlos Arthur Taylor and Minnie Bertha (Burki) Taylor.
She graduated from Oldham High School in Oldham, S.D. She attended two years at General Beadle State College and received her Bachelor of Education degree from Black Hills State College.
On Dec. 28, 1942, she married Edgar Whitmore Seely in Hartington, Nebraska. They farmed north of Winfred, S,D, until 1968 when they moved to Spearfish.
She spent several years near Harold, S.D. breaking, riding and working horses for her uncles. She taught for 32 years in country schools in Lake and Kingsbury Counties in Easter, S.D. and Butte, Harding and Meade Counties in Western, S.D., retiring in 1982.
Since 1993, she shared time living with her two daughters and enjoying their companionship. In April 2000, she moved to Serenity Corner north of Spearfish, where she retired for one year.
She was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Spearfish and was a member of the South Dakota Education Association, the Arabian Horse Association and Spearfish Senior Citizens Center.
She enjoyed country living, working in her garden and taking care of her flowers. She had a love for her horses and dogs.
Survivors include her two daughters and sons-in-law, Lily May and Gordon Odell of Spearfish; Rosann and Dennis Siminoe of Craig; sisters, Fairolo Horton of San Diego, Calif., Charrold Marshall of Ft. Worth, Texas, twin sisters Violet Karst of Aberdeen, S.D. and Viola Feistner of Madison, S.D.; sister-in-law, Marie Seely of Oregon and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1982, sister, Florence and brother, Arthur.
Services were Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Spearfish with Reverend Randy Fett officiating. Burial followed at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
