Virgil R. “Pop” Seely


Virgil R. 'Pop' Seely Oct. 7, 1926 — Oct. 4, 2009 Virgil R. "Pop" Seely, 82, of Duncan, passed away Sunday, Oct. 4, 2009, in Meridian Nursing Center. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Tecumseh City Cemetery with the Rev. Travis Stewart officiating. Services are under the direction of the Bailes-Polk Funeral Home. Virgil was born Oct. 7, 1926, at Holdenville, the youngest son of John and Mary Starkey Seely. He grew up mostly in the oil fields of Oklahoma and Texas. He lived a little while on a small farm at Henryetta, Okla., and then moved to Shawnee in 1951. He worked for the City of Shawnee until his vision failed and he eventually became totally blind. He and Mamie Lee Spencer were married Nov. 9, 1960, at Shawnee, and she preceded him in death on March 18, 1976. He and Mamie were members of Liberty Baptist Church in Shawnee. In 1985, he moved to the Duncan area to be near his sister. He was also preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Christina Lamb; a brother, John Seely; a nephew, Virgil K. Foster; and a brother-in-law, Virgil Foster. Survivors include his sister, Estelle Foster of Marlow; three nephews: Wayne Foster and his wife, Mary, of Comanche, Guy Foster and his wife, Susan, of Enid, and Dennis Elrod and his wife, Judy, of Oklahoma; a niece, Marita June Coleman of Oklahoma; three great-nieces and three great-nephews.
