WILLIAM J. SEELY DIES IN SALT LAKE

Former Speaker of the Utah House Succumbs After a Three Months’ Illness

Salt Lake, July 22 – William J. Seely, aged 44, of Castle Dale, former speaker of the Utah house of representatives, died last night in his Salt Lake home, east Sixth South street, after an illness of three months.

Mr. Seely was born in Mt. Pleasant and was educated in the public schools, later attending Brigham Young university and the University of Utah. He was admitted to the bar in 1914.

Mr. Seely was the son of Justus Wellington and Eliza Reynolds Seely. His ancestors were of early American stock, landing in Massachusetts with the Winthrop fleet. His grandfather was one of the Utah pioneers, arriving in the Salt Lake valley in 1847.

He was twice a member of the Utah legislature, speaker of the house during his last term in 1913, recorder of Emery county, 1909-10, and was travelling auditors of the state under Lincoln G. Kelly, state auditor, 1913 to 1916. He was a member of the Mormon church and until recently filled a bishopric in Castle Dale. He was a member of the Castle Dale school board for nine years.

Besides his widow, who was Miss Lucy M. Barton, daughter of James and Eliza Barton, Twenty-first ward, Salt Lake, three daughters, Miss Margaret Seely, Miss Drusilla Seely and Miss Lucia Seely; twelve brothers and sisters, Justus Seely, Castle Dale; Joseph Seely, Altona; Mrs. Clara Hanson, Roosevelt; Mrs. Anna King, Grace, Idaho; Miss Stella Seely, Carl Seely, Castle Dale; Miss Nora Lamph, Rains; Miss Jennie Seely, Salt Lake; Miss Dora Seely, Miss Etta Seely and Seely, Castle Dale survive.
