SEELYE – Ellice (Mosbacher) Seelye, died on Thursday, March 11, 1999 in Grand Rapids. She was 97. Born in Wichita, KS, November 4, 1901, she attended colleges in San Diego and Wichita (Fairmont), later studying at Smith College, receiving her Master Degree in Industrial and Fine Arts at Columbia in 1931. Many childhood summers were spent in Grand Rapids visiting her grandmother, Malissa Trump Preston, as well as Aunt Clara Preston Slade, Uncle Thom Preston and cousins. Grand Rapids Public School recruited her at Columbia in 1931. Sometimes known as “Mossy” she taught fifth grade during the depression, continuing on as the traveling art teacher in elementary schools, retiring after 34 years from the district’s Art Department. Soon after she moved from Walker to Oakwood Manor in Grand Rapids, residing there for 25 years. Preceded in death by her father, Henry Gold Seelye, her mother, Florence Preston Seelye, her sister, Frances Seelye and her brother, Preston Joseph Seelye, she is survived by nieces, Nancy Ellice Seelye (Mrs. Gary) Chambers of St. Charles, MO and Marilyn Seelye (Mrs. Frank Sullivan of Manteca, CA; sister-in-law Mary (Mrs. Preston Seelye) and grandniece, Kimberly Marie Ellice Sullivan (Mrs. Andy) Cunningham also of Manteca, CA. Survivors of her special family are Sophia and Raymond McElheny and Michael Chernoby of Walker, and Peg McClain her companion and guardian. A funeral service will be Monday, March 15 at 10:00 a.m. in the funeral home chapel. Visitation will be one hour prior to time of service. Her remains will lay at rest adjoining other family members in Fulton Street Cemetery, Grand Rapids, MI contribution are suggested to the American Cancer Society. The family is being served by
