Dr. Edward Eggleston Seelye, 75, a psychiatrist and specialist in the treatment of alcoholism, died Saturday, July 3, 1999 at his family home in Lake George, NY. Dr. Seelye was Medical Director of the Outpatient Evaluation Service at the Westchester Division of New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center in White Plains. Born February 8, 1924, in White Plains, Dr. Seelye graduated from Columbia College in 1948 and from Albany Medical College of Union University in 1955. He was an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Cornell Medical College, the Staff Psychiatrist of the Geriatric Service, and the physician in charge of electric shock therapy. Dr. Seelye was an amateur historian with a particular interest in American and European history, derived in part from his family’s history stretching over two centuries at Lake George. He died suddenly of a heart attack at his Lake home, Mellowstone, which was built in 1880 as a library for his great-grandfather, Edward Eggleston, the 19th century author, for whom he was named. He is survived by a sister, Elizabeth Seelye Williams. His brother, Elwyn Seelye II, and another sister, Jane Seelye West, predeceased him. He is also survived by five nieces: Katharine Q. Seelye, Sharon W. Davies, Lynn Rasmussen, Ann Campanella and Elizabeth Williams Mann; four nephews: Thomas Seelye West, James E. West , Winton Williams Jr., and Richard Seelye Williams . Memorial service, Noon, Friday, July 9, at the family cemetery at Lake George. Another service is planned for 7:30 pm, Thursday, July 15, at the Ridgeview Congregational Church in White Plains. LAKE GEORGE – Dr. Edward Eggleston Seelye, 75, died Saturday, July 3, 1999, at his family home here in Dunhams Bay after a sudden heart attack.

Dr. Seelye was the medical director of the Outpatient Evaluation Service at the New York Hospital-Cornell University Medical College, Westchester Division, in White Plains.

Born Feb. 8, 1924, in White Plains, Dr. Seelye was the son of Elwyn and Eleanor Janeway Seelye. The Seelyes have been residents for more than two centuries of the west side of Dunhams Bay, known as Joshua’s Rock, where Dr. Seelye maintained the family home known as Mellowstone.

Dr. Seelye graduated from Columbia College in 1948 and from Albany Medical College of Union University in 1955.

He was an assistant professor of psychiatry at Cornell Medical College in White Plains, the staff psychiatrist of the geriatric service and physician in charge of electric shock therapy.

Dr. Seelye was also the author of numerous journal articles in his specialties, which included the treatment of alcoholism, geriatric disorders and the relationship between therapy and psychoactive drugs.

He was an amateur historian with a particular interest in American and European history, derived in part from his family’s long-time connection with Lake George. He loved the lake, where he spent most summer weekends and where he tended the grounds of the family property, known as Joshua’s Rock.

As president of the family’s Joshua’s Rock Corp., he was devoted to preserving its land and holdings. His home, Mellowstone, was built in 1880, as a library for his great-grandfather, Edward Eggleston, the 19th-century author. The house was placed on the National Register of Historic Landmarks in 1972.

A sister Jane Seelye West and a brother, Elwyn Seelye II, died before him.

He is survived by a sister, Elizabeth Seelye Williams of Newport, N.C. He is also survived by five nieces: Sharon W. Davies of Cleverdale, Lynn Rasmussen of Burnt Hills, Katharine Q. Seelye of Washington, D.C., Ann Campanella of Huntersville, N.C., and Elizabeth Williams Mann of Newport, N.C.; four nephews; Thomas Seelye West of Latham, James E. West of Indian Lake, Winton Williams Jr. of Charlotte, N.C., and Richard Seelye Williams of Chapel Hill, N.C.

Relatives and friends are invited to a memorial service at noon on Friday, July 9, at the family cemetery at Dunhams Bay.

Another memorial service is planned later at Ridgeview Congregational Church in White Plains.
