Senators To Attend Seelye Rites

Albany – A committee of 12 members of the State Senate, including Sen. Walter J. Mahoney of Erie County, Republican majority leader in the Upper House, will attend the funeral today of former Sen. Gilbert T. Seelye of Burnt Hills, who died Wednesday.

Sen. Seelye, who for many years represented the Rensselaer-Saratoga counties district, retired as a legislator two years ago. Previous to being elected to the Senate he served as assemblyman from Saratoga County.

Gilbert T. Seelye, Republican, of Burnt Hills, Saratoga County, represents Rensselaer and Saratoga Counties in the State Senate. He was born in Burnt Hills and has been a lifelong resident. He served in the Assembly during the years 1913 – 1918. Mr. Seeley was elected to the Senate in 1938 by a vote of approximately 20,000 over his Democratic opponent. In 1940 he was reelected by a majority of approximately 18,000 and in 1942 by more than 22,000. His combined vote in Rensselaer and Saratoga Counties in 1950, when last elected, was 60,976 as against a total vote for three opposing candidates of 35,984. He is chairman of the Senate Agricultural Committee. Other committee assignments are Finance, Highway and Parkways, Internal Affairs, Public Relief and Welfare, Public Service and Taxation.
