WORCESTER - Harriet (Douglas) Seelye, 87, of 70 Briarwood Circle, formerly of Paxton, a church deaconess, died Saturday in Memorial Hospital.

Her husband of 56 years, Laurens C. Seelye, died in 1992. She leaves a son, Walter C. Seelye II; a daughter, Mary "Polly" S. Meltzer of Sudbury; a sister, Dorothy Purdy of Houston; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. She was born in Scranton, Pa., daughter of William and Mary (Dunshee) Douglas, and lived 42 years in Paxton before moving to Worcester in 1977. She held a master's degree in French from Middlebury College in Vermont.

Mrs. Seelye was a deaconess of the First Baptist Church and a past president of its Woman's Association. She was a past president of the Worcester Craft Center, past vice president of the Young Women's Christian Association, and past secretary of the Junior League of Worcester. She was also a member of the Hall Club, Thursday Club and La Quinzaine Club.

The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow in First Baptist Church, 111 Park Ave. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Bristol, Vt. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church Memorial Fund, 111 Park Ave., Worcester 01609. Caswell-King Funeral Home, 474 Grove St. is directing arrangements.
