Publication Terry Walter Seelye, age 59, of Deer River, made his debut in heaven on April 7, 2008 after battling cancer for over two years. His final days at St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth were with family whose support gave him much comfort. He was loved by all who knew him for his good nature, kind heart, positive spirit and gentle ways.

He was born on March 26, 1949, in Cass Lake, MN, the son of Earl and Clarice Seelye. He spent his early years in Bena, MN, moving with his family to Cass Lake where he graduated from high school in 1967. He served in the US Army from 1969 to 1971, achieving the rank of sergeant. He was a highly decorated Viet Nam combat soldier receiving 5 service medals including the Bronze Star, the Army Commendation Medal and the Viet Nam Service Medal.

Upon his return from the service, he married Peggy Coyle in Cass Lake on August 6, 1972. They made their home in Dallas, Texas with their son, Dustin. Terry was employed with Dallas County until reoccurring military back injuries disabled him. On December 1, 1989, Terry married Terri Moore. They have one daughter, Katelin. He dearly loved his children.

During his last years, Terry’s courageous fight against cancer did not prevent him from enjoying the beautiful north woods of the Leech Lake Reservation. He especially enjoyed fishing and hunting with friends and family. Terry enjoyed making walking sticks and tomahawks out of all natural materials, decorated with beadwork.

He is survived by his wife, Terri and daughter Katelin of Texas, son Dustin (Donielle) and grandchildren Daelen and Drea Claire of Texas. He is also survived by his mother Clarice and his brothers, Earl and Lenny of Deer River; sister, Sandra Sleigh of Texas; niece and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Visitation was held on April 10 at Bena’s Community Center. A celebration of his life followed on April 11 at the Bena Alliance Church with Pastor Torger Johnson (Makahum Bible Chapel) officiating. Full military honors were provided by the Leech Lake Reservation Honor Guard.
