Starting Point: Zachariah (Uriah?) Seeley and John L Seeley

Paul Seeley (pnseeley@juno.com) sent in photos of some graves in Pine Lake Cemetery, West Bloomfield, Oakland Co., MI. They are of Zachariah L. Seeley (31 Aug 1811 - 25 Apr 1891) and his wife Julia (3 Jun 1817 - 9 Mar 1901). There are also graves of their daughter Mary J who d. 24 Aug 1878 age 43 yr 8 mos 6 days and her husband Harvey Peck (15 Sept 1825 - 8 Aug 1888). What is their relation to the SGS Seeleys?

Considering that John L is living between Zachariah Seeley and Arvilla Seeley Harger in the 1860 census, he may be related in some way, but how? Also, is Mary Peck, mother of Allice the same person as Mary J. Seeley listed in the 1850 census? If you have an idea, let me know.

Chris Havnar found an obituary for Morene Ethel Seely who d. 5 April, 2002 in Spearfish, SD. I am trying to find the line for her husband, Edgar Whitmore Seely. So it looks like Edgar, b. 1907 is a son of Levi and Lilian Seely. Levi is a son of Edgar A and Adelia Harriet (Whitmore) Seely. Edgar A Seely was b. Feb 1836 NY. If you can help identify this Edgar or verify this lineage please let me know.

      Jan 2010:

Update to Research Query 2008-B Re: Edgar Whitmore Seely

In this query we were trying to verify the lineage of Edgar – we have his wife Morene’s obituary on our website.

Loretta Eichmann (leichmann@iw.net) is the step-daughter of Edgar’s brother Milton Austin Seely. She sent a copy of Milton Austin Seely’s death certificate naming his parents as Levi Seely and Lillian Spencer. Loretta shared other information on the family: Levi W. Seely d. 20 July 1949 in Charles Mix Co.SD and is buried in Sioux Falls at the Hills of Rest. He was b. 22 May 1874. His wife, Lillian Spencer Seely was b. 22 Jan 1886 and d. 3 Dec. 1918. Her daughter, Loretta’s aunt Harriet Adelia, said that where her mother was buried is now a road. Loretta was told that when Lillian died Levi's sister Elsie Seely Wilka went and got the children and gave them to her daughters to care for. Silvia Wilka Parkinson had Edgar, Milton Austin and Harriet Adelia. Daughter Golda Wilka Selken took Blanch who was b. 1911 and d. 13 May 1969. Another son, Harry Edward was b. 13 Sept 1912 and was adopted by Lillian’s sister. They moved to CA.

We had earlier shown that Levi is a son of Edgar A Seely b. 1836 NY and his wife Adelia Harriet Whitmore. We would still like to identify this Edgar’s parents.

      May 2009:

Update to Research Query 2008-B Re: Edgar Whitmore Seely

In this query we had identified the grandfather of Edgar W Seely as Edgar A. Seely b. about 1836 NY, married to Adelia Harriet Whitmore b. OH and residing in Lyon Co. IA in 1880.

Loretta Eichmann (leichmann@iw.net) contacted us recently about the ancestry of Levi Seely, father of Milton Austin Seely. Milton was her step-father. Levi was married to Lillian Spenser. It turns out that Milton Austin Seely (identified as Austin in 1910 and 1920 censuses) is the younger brother of Edgar Whitmore Seely.

We still would like to identify the ancestry of Edgar A. Seely.

Research Query Number: 2008-A
Starting Point: Cyrus Seeley md to Eliza S Ross of Monroe and Orleans Co. NY

I found the short bio below while researching something else... I was able to find quite a bit of info on John R Seeley and his siblings, all children of Cyrus and Eliza S (Ross) Seeley. However I can't track down anything definite on Cyrus' ancestry - just some clues - see below.

      Findings:

From Landmarks of Orleans County, New York ... By Isaac Smith Signor,
Henry Perry Smith 1894, p. 92-3

Seeley, John K. was born in Cattaraugus County July 26 1836 and is a son of Cyrus and Eliza S Seeley. He has three sisters, the youngest, Mrs PM Hayford came to Holley in 1878, where she now resides. She had three daughters and one son. His brother, Anson J Seeley, at our country's call in 1861 enlisted. He served his country two years, was taken prisoner and sent to Andersonville where he died in 1863. John R Seeley came from Monroe County in 1864 and settled in Murray where he is a farmer. For several years during his early residence here he taught school. He is a member of the A.O.U.W. of Holley. In 1861 Mr Seeley married Pauline Reed, daughter of Daniel W. and Electa Reed of Murray. They are both members of the Baptist Church of Holley.

(The John K seems to be a typo - see data below)

Andersonville Prison Records (US Parks Service Civil War Soldiers and Sailors)

Seeley, Anson J.: Private in 140 New York Infantry – Company A. He was captured 26 May 1864 at Bethesda Church, VA.

From the SGS database
CYRUS b.1803 RI d. 1837 md. ROSS, ELIZA in 1826

However Cyrus didn’t die in 1837 since I found Cyrus Seeley and Eliza in the 1830 census of Greece, Monroe, NY; 1840 census of Clarkson, Monroe, NY; 1850 Greece, Monroe, NY,; 1860 Murray, Orleans, NY; and 1870 Clarkson, Monroe, NY. Eliza is a widow living with daughter Phoebe Hayford in Holley, Orleans, NY in 1880. From census records the children of Cyrus and Eliza are Anson J. b. 1829, Esther S. b. 1834, John R. b. 1837, Phebe M b. 1840, Charles b. 1850. There is another dau. age 5-10 in the 1840 census. The census always has Cyrus b. NY.

In 1870 Martha E and Annie E Way are living with Cyrus and Eliza.

With all this information I am supposing that Cyrus may be a grandson of Nathaniel Seeley, SGS# 601. Bennett Seeley (SGS# 1908) is in the 1830 and 1840 censuses of Clarkson, Monroe, NY. Perhaps he is an uncle of Cyrus. There is one record on Familysearch.org indicating a Cyrus b. to Anson Seeley (SGS 1907?) but there are no sources. As you can see the Justus Seeley md to Sarah Sheldon named a son Cyrus and lived in the same area. Could he be a brother of Cyrus?
