Re: William Seeley of Waterbury, CT

One of the SGS DNA participants tested as a descendant of Obadiah but has their lineage as a descendant of Nathaniel. The line checks out fine until we get back to Charles Seeley b. 1821 Waterbury, New Haven, CT. One source suggests that his father is SGS# 1137, William H Seeley (md unnamed) who we have in the Nathaniel line. We have several children listed but no Charles. Another source suggests that the father is SGS# 3184 William Seeley (md Patty ___). He is in the Obadiah line but he moved to Madison Co. IL in 1818. Charles is in New Haven Co. CT.

      Findings:

1850 census Waterbury, New Haven, CT
Seely, Charles, age 29, farmer, b. CT
Seely, Amy, age 34, b. CT
Seely, Chloe age 5, George L age 4, Charles B age 2, Grace age 11 mo., all b. CT
Whaley, James, age 19 b. IRE
Mix, David, age 14, b. CT

In 1860 Chas age 38 and Anna age 44 are in Meriden, New Haven, CT with Chloe J age 15, Geo S age 14, Chas B age 12, Grace A. age 10, Polly M age 4, all b. CT.

The DNA subject was a descendant of George S. b. 1846.

1850 census Waterbury, New Haven, CT
Seeley, William, age 72, laborer, b. CT
Seeley, Martha, age 60, b. CT

William Seely is in the 1840 Waterbury census with his age 60-70 and a son 20-30 that would correspond to Charles. Also a female age 10-15 and one age 50-60

In Waterbury in 1830 Wm Seeley has a son age 5-10, a dau. <5 and another dau. 5-10; wife is 40-50 as is William

In Waterbury in 1820 Wm Sele: 1 male <10, 1 10-16, 1 26-45; 1 female <10, 1 26-45

In Waterbury First Society, New Haven, CT 1810
Wm Selah: 4 males <10, 1 26-45, 1 female <10, 1 26-45

I don’t see William in the 1800 New Haven County CT census. If you can provide a lineage for William Seeley please contact me.

Re: William Seeley of Waterbury, CT, father of Charles b. 1821

This query arose because a DNA test result from a descendant of Charles Seely showed that he was in the Obadiah line and he had his lineage traced to Nathaniel. Two suggestions had been that this William was either SGS# 3184 (of the Obadiah line) or SGS# 1137 (of the Nathaniel line). We had ruled out the William identified as # 3184 because he moved to IL before Charles was b. in CT.

Jean Richards (jbeoabn@gmail.com ) contacted us to report that she is a cousin of the man who had the DNA test. She and her cousins have researched and found various facts about William and Charles:

  • In Volume 50 of The Barbour Collection of Connecticut Town Vital Records, page 329, under Seeley, Seley: "Charles s. William of Waterbury m. Amy Pritchard d. Roger of Waterbury Dec. 25, 1843". In the Waterbury Vital Records, that would be Vol. 3, P. 229.
  • a copy of death record from Waterbury City Hall for William Seeley dated 22 September 1854 at age 74, making his birth about 1780.
  • Four children of "William and Patty Seley" were buried in Waterbury's Grand Street Cemetery. They are: Albert, Mar 26, 1811; David A. Sep 1, 1815; Nelson, Aug 28, 1815; Sherman, Apr 20, 1816.

Jean theorizes that it may be that there is little information on William (SGS# 1137) because his father (William, SGS# 377) was charged with aiding the (Loyalist) raiders of Dayton House in 1780.

We still have the problem that William #377 is identified in the Nathaniel line. Can anyone figure out where he belongs in the Obadiah line?

If you go to this link you will find a New York Times article about Phebe Ann Seeley, born 4 July 1781 to William Seeley of Hoboken, NJ. http://query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9D07EEDB103CEE3ABC4A52DFB166838A699FDE

The article is about the 100th anniversary of Phebe’s birth and her memories of her life. She says she was married twice – at age 18 to Bernard Tool by whom she had 9 children and several years after his death to Job Allen. She says she saw George Washington as a young girl, survived a fire on Wall Street and has outlived all her children except the youngest, Mrs Jane Ann Bratton age 54 whom she lives with.

      Findings:

1880 census Union, Hudson, NJ
Allen, Phebe, age 98, b. NJ, NJ, NJ

1860 census N. Bergen, Hudson, NJ
Allen, Job, age 76, b. ENG, wheelwright,
Allen, Phoebe, age 56 b. NJ
Croffifer, Fredk, age 40, b. GER, mason
Croffifer, Mary, age 30, b. NJ
Croffifer, Frederick, age 2, b. NJ
(In 1850 Job Allen age 66 b. England is also in North Bergen with Benjamin Allen age 14)

Can anyone corroborate that Phebe Ann Seeley was b. in 1781 or identify her father William?

Update to Research Query 2009-B Re: Charles Seely b. 1818 CT

Researching some obituaries had led me back through the census to Charles and Caroline Seely of Baraboo, Sauk, WI in 1850. Now I have a response from Rita A. Seeley, an SGS Life Member. She writes that Charles Seely and Caroline Johnson Seely were her g-g-grandparents. Charles (b. 1818) and Caroline were married March 20, 1836 in Newtown, Fairfield, CT. She has been trying to find their connection to the rest of the Seeley family, but has found nothing on their parents. Rita had her brother take the DNA test which connected him to Nathaniel, son of Robert Seeley. So, she has the Seeleys coming down and going up, but still can't make them meet in the middle! If anyone else is researching this branch of the family, Rita would love to hear from them. Her email is raseeley@centurytel.net.

Latest info: I found Chas Seelye in the 1840 census of Newtown.

Chas Seelye: 1 male <5, 1 male 20-30; 2 females <5, 1 female 20-30, 1 female 50-60.

Listed just before Chas, is Thos: 1 male 10-15, 1 male 40-50; no females

Can anyone identify this Charles Seelye/Seely?

Update to Research Query 2009-B Re: Charles Seely b. 1818 CT

I recently received the following query from Harold B Seeley (seeleyji42@gmail.com). Harold is attempting to find anything he can on his grandfather Harold B Seeley.

This is what he has but has not been able to confirm: Harold B. Seeley, born 1876, Manston (Mauston?), Juneau County, Wisconsin. He married Clara Bertha Junker April 14, 1903, at Toledo, Iowa. Their son, Eugene Lewis Seeley, was born February 25, 1912, occupation - travelling salesman.

I discovered that we already had some information on Harold in the query information and updates. You can find the original query at: http://www.seeley-society.net/qlist2k9-res.html

We had started from Harold B Seeley’s younger brother Lewis Earl Seeley and worked his line up and down but hadn’t done much with Lewis’s siblings. Lewis Earl and Harold B were both sons of William, son of Charles and Caroline Johnson Seely.

Eugene Seeley names his parents as Harold B Seeley age 50 b. WI and Clara B Junker age 53 b. IA, md IA. This indicates that Harold is still alive... but I can't find him in any later censuses nor a death record.
